Exploring construction timelines and completion rates
In an experimental release by Stats NZ, insights into the construction industry’s timelines and completion rates for new dwellings have been unveiled.
The early data, leveraging inspections and code compliance certificate information from a selection of building consent authorities, offers a unique glimpse into the average duration of building phases.
Stats NZ cautioned that it's important to note that this information is provisional and may evolve as methodologies are refined or additional data is incorporated.
Findings on building timeframes
According to the latest Stats NZ figures:
- Dwellings consented in the June quarter took an average of 163 calendar days to reach their first inspection.
- Final inspections for dwellings consented in September 2022 were achieved in an average of 533 calendar days.
- The journey to code compliance certification for dwellings consented in June 2022 spanned an average of 569 calendar days.
These durations reflect the complexity and scale of building projects, including apartments, townhouses, and retirement villages, which typically extend beyond the construction timeframes for standalone houses.
Rising completion rates
The December quarter saw 11,831 new dwellings receive their code compliance certificate, marking a 17% increase from the same period in the previous year.
Furthermore, the year ended December witnessed 43,160 dwellings achieving certification, representing a 20% uplift from the year ended December 2022. This upward trend underscores a significant rise in construction activity, contributing to the national housing stock.
Feedback welcomed on experimental data
As this release is part of an experimental section, stakeholders and the public are encouraged to engage with the findings and provide feedback. This collaborative approach aims to enhance the accuracy and relevance of construction industry data, supporting informed decision-making across the sector.
