Government backs construction of 174 affordable rental homes

The government will build 172 rental homes across New Zealand with the help of the Affordable Housing Fund, Housing Minister Megan Woods (pictured above) has announced.

The Affordable Housing Fund was established to support the development of new affordable homes, to address the needs of low-to-moderate income New Zealand households who struggle to pay rent.

“One hundred seventy-four new affordable rental homes will be built across the country because as a result of this second round of the Fund, bringing to 266 the total number approved to date,” Woods said. “The Affordable Housing Fund is making a real difference in bringing on more affordable homes for New Zealanders, which the National Party says it will cut, if it gets into government.”

The housing minister said green shoots of change are starting to emerge in the housing market, with record building consents and more affordable housing being built, as a result of the government’s many initiatives to address the housing crisis.

“These partnerships will support and grow the affordable housing sector, who are critical to addressing the needs of New Zealanders who struggle to meet the cost of a market rental, but for various reasons can’t access public housing,” Woods said.

The second round of funding will support the construction of 65 affordable rental homes in Hawke’s Bay, 64 homes in the Bay of Plenty (including 38 in Rotorua),16 homes in Northland, 24 homes in Christchurch, and five homes for Blenheim.

The Affordable Housing Fund focuses on growing the affordable housing provision, both rental and homeownership, on land owned by iwi and Māori groups, councils and community groups.
