Consents down in both stand-alone and multi-unit homes
New homes consented in the June 2023 quarter numbered 9,888, down 20% compared with the same quarter last year, Stats NZ figures showed.
“The June 2023 quarter marked the second quarter in a row where there was a decrease in both the number of stand-alone houses and the number of multi-unit homes consented,” said Michael Heslop, construction and property statistics manager.
In the June quarter, 4,281 stand-alone houses were consented, down 21% than the June 2022 quarter, and 5,607 multi-unit homes, down 18% over the same period.
Multi-unit homes included townhouses, apartments, retirement village units, and flats.
In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of new homes consented in the June quarter dropped 2.6%, compared with the seasonally adjusted fall of 8.8% in the March quarter.
In the year ended June, new homes consented was down 12% year-on-year to 44,529. That’s similar to the same period in 2021, when there were 44,331 new homes consented.
Across the regions, only Gisborne, Tasman, Nelson, and Marlborough consented fewer new homes, compared with the prior year.
“In these four regions, the increase was driven by the growing number of multi-unit homes consented,” Heslop said.
Auckland posted the highest number of new homes consented in the year ended June, with 19,085 (down 12%). This was followed by Canterbury with 7,838 (down 9.2%), Waikato with 4,265 (down 16%), and Wellington with 3,356 (down 14%), Stats NZ data showed.
