Kiwis report declining quality of life despite financial gains

A recent survey conducted by the Quality of Life Project revealed a decline in the overall satisfaction of New Zealanders with their quality of life.

While 77% of respondents still feel positive about their life circumstances, this figure represents a drop from 83% in 2022 and 87% in 2020.

The survey, which involves multiple city councils across the nation, including Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, and others, highlights a growing disparity in the population's contentment, RNZ reported.

Signs of improvement for some

Despite the overall decline, there is a silver lining as a greater number of people feel their circumstances have improved over the past year. About 25% of those surveyed in 2024 reported an improvement, up from 18% in 2022. This increase is largely attributed to better financial stability and health.

Responses such as “I have savings, a partner, less debt and feeling a lot better mentally” and “I have gained financial independence and security by purchasing a house and getting a new job with better pay,” underscored the personal advancements contributing to this sentiment, RNZ reported.

Shifting concerns

The focus of concerns has shifted for many New Zealanders, with less emphasis on climate change and more on the cost of living and housing affordability. Only 32% of respondents in 2024 found their housing costs affordable, and just 35% felt they had sufficient funds to meet daily needs.

Expressions of frustration were common, with one individual noting, “Transport costs have increased, food prices have increased faster than my pay rate, government is doing everything it can to help the rich at the expense of the poor.”

Regional variations in satisfaction

The survey also revealed significant regional variations in quality-of-life satisfaction.

Auckland and Porirua had the lowest satisfaction rates, with only 75% of respondents feeling positive. In contrast, Dunedin residents reported the highest satisfaction at 83%, slightly ahead of Wellington’s 81%, RNZ reported.

The Quality of Life survey, which is carried out biennially, is scheduled to continue in 2026, offering further insights into the evolving perceptions of New Zealanders regarding their quality of life.
