New development addresses Palmerston North's housing needs

In a significant boost to local housing availability, Palmerston North has celebrated the completion of a new social housing development.
This project, a collaborative effort between SOHO Group and the not-for-profit organisation Home in Place, swiftly provided homes to residents, with 13 tenants settling in just two days after its completion.
Cultural significance and community integration
The opening week festivities included a traditional Māori blessing led by Lous, a Rangitāne Pou Tikanga (cultural leader), which paid homage to the land’s ancestors and history.
“This tradition was to instill belonging and connection to the community for those moving into their new homes,” the participants said.
The event underscored the cultural and communal importance of the new development, aligning with local traditions to foster a sense of belonging among new residents.
Statements from local leadership
Mayor Grant Smith commented on the project’s completion and its significance for the community.
“I am proud to welcome new residents to the vibrant community of Palmerston North,” Smith said. “This much-needed social housing development is a testament to the investment and partnership between SOHO Group, the developers, and Home in Place, the community housing provider.”
Development features and accessibility
Strategically located within walking distance to the city center, the development includes practical features like off-street parking, an undercover bike store, and landscaped communal spaces.
The building design incorporates six two-bedroom and nine one-bedroom units, with ground-floor units compliant with Lifemark 4-Star performance standards to accommodate people with disabilities.
Environmental and social responsibility
SOHO Group has not only met but exceeded building regulations by securing a Homestar 6 sustainability rating and adhering to Healthy Homes standards. This commitment reflects their dedication to providing environmentally friendly and high-quality housing.
Long-term housing support
The apartments are managed under a direct lease model with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MHUD), ensuring long-term housing support for tenants prequalified by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) on the Social Housing Register.
This model highlights the acute demand for quality social housing solutions amidst ongoing national housing challenges.
Vision for the future
Larissa Bridge (pictured above), CEO of Home in Place New Zealand, expressed the organisation’s mission.
“Home in Place exists to provide safe, secure, and affordable homes for those in need,” Bridge said. “Our purpose is not only to address the housing challenges faced by our communities but also to create opportunities for individuals and whānau to thrive within supportive environments.”
Commitment to housing security
As the housing crisis persists, Home in Place is dedicated to growing its influence and forming partnerships that significantly improve the lives of those affected by housing insecurity, aiming to provide both shelter and opportunities for community development.
