Partnership fuels iwi housing goals

The partnership between Te Rūnaka o Awarua, a Ngāi Tahu hapū in Motupōhue (Bluff), and Kāinga Ora, New Zealand’s urban development authority, is set to boost the hapū’s efforts to provide affordable housing at Aotearoa’s southernmost marae.

“We need to be able to provide for our people so that they can remain here in a place that is safe and warm and creates opportunities for our people,” said Corey Bragg, project manager at Te Rūnaka o Awarua.

Expanding local impact

Te Rūnaka o Awarua has long been a community hub, hosting events and operating as a Civil defence base.

With the local Māori population growing to almost half of Motupōhue’s 1,800 residents, the need for additional housing has become increasingly pressing.

The recent opportunity to expand their landholdings has opened new possibilities for development, supported by Kāinga Ora’s expertise.

Collaborative efforts in planning

Kāinga Ora has not only provided planning and technical support but has also played a crucial role in building local capacity and enhancing community wellbeing.

“It's all about bringing those experts together to get a bit of an idea of the types of plans we could put together to develop that site for housing,” said Kahurangi Tapsell, a town planner and Principal Advisor – Te Kurutao at Kāinga Ora.
