New Zealand Adviser TV recently featured an engaging interview with Peter Norris, managing director at Opes Mortgages, who was honoured as a winner of the Top Advisers Award for 2024. Norris shared his journey, the significance of client relationships, and his optimistic outlook for New Zealand's mortgage sector.
When asked about the award’s significance, Norris said: “It’s not necessarily the award or the accolades that we get out of bed for every day... At the end of the day, it’s about the clients and what we get to do for them.” However, he acknowledged the recognition as a testament to the long hours and dedication that he and his team invest to deliver exceptional service.
From his beginnings at BNZ to founding Opes Mortgages, Norris has built an impressive career focused on empowering clients to take control of their financial futures. Under his leadership, Opes Mortgages has focused on long-term wealth creation, primarily through tailored mortgage solutions and investment property strategies. “Our typical client comes to us because they want more freedom in the future,” Norris said. “It’s not about becoming property moguls—it’s about filling the retirement gap and achieving their goals, like helping put kids through school or travelling more.”
For Norris, strong relationships have shaped the foundation of his success: “The lifetime value of a client really comes down to how deep that relationship can go. It’s about being the first person they call when they have a mortgage question – whether it’s a refinance or a top-up.”
Norris’ leadership continues to make a difference for clients across New Zealand. Reflecting on the current mortgage and finance landscape, Norris expressed optimism: “The last few years have been tough, but I believe we’re through the worst of it. With interest rates and inflation under control, I’m excited about the opportunities ahead for clients to achieve their long-term goals.”
