New focus on economic insights
The Reserve Bank (RBNZ) has announced its updated research agenda for 2024-25, emphasising the need for ongoing exploration of New Zealand’s economic landscape.
With this agenda, RBNZ aims to enhance its understanding of key economic questions that inform its monetary policy decisions and its role as guardian of the country’s financial system.
“In an ever-changing world, our research into different dimensions of the New Zealand economy is the bedrock enabling us to make well-informed policy decisions,” RBNZ said.
Key research themes to address economic questions
The 2024-25 agenda is structured around six main themes shaped by findings from the recent Review and Assessment of Monetary Policy covering 2017-2022. These themes address core areas where RBNZ sees a need to deepen its knowledge to guide future policy choices. The six themes are:
- Inflation – Understanding inflation drivers in New Zealand’s economy.
- Forecasting and modelling – Refining predictive tools for economic planning.
- Tools, transmission, and communication – Examining how policy decisions impact the economy.
- Small open economy macroeconomics – Analyzing the unique dynamics of New Zealand’s economy in a global context.
- Labour market – Exploring workforce trends and their impact on economic stability.
- Monetary policy framework, strategy, and coordination – Reviewing policy approaches for effectiveness and alignment.
Collaboration and public engagement
RBNZ actively seeks collaboration with external researchers, academics, central banks, government agencies, and private sector experts to advance its research efforts.
By publishing its research, RBNZ invites public dialogue on economic topics while gathering feedback from the broader economics community. This engagement, RBNZ said, is intended to “strengthen the public’s understanding of our policy choices and build trust.”
Invitation to researchers
In addition to RBNZ’s own research projects, the bank encourages external researchers with relevant expertise to contribute to its studies, with details available through their Opportunities for Researchers program.
