Estimates used for planning, policy formation, business decisions, and “bottom lines”
Statistics New Zealand (Stats NZ) has released its dwelling and household estimates for the June 2021 quarter.
For the quarter ended on June 30, 2021, private dwelling estimates hit 1,963,200 – up from 1,954,000 in the March 2021 quarter. Meanwhile, household estimates for the same period reached 1,874,100 – up from 1,865,300 in the March 2021 quarter.
Dwelling estimates measure the private dwelling stock in New Zealand and include occupied and unoccupied private dwellings. Meanwhile, household estimates measure the usually occupied private dwellings in the country.
Both estimates are used for planning, policy formation, business decisions, and as “bottom lines” to calculate market coverage rates.

Stats NZ derives private dwellings and household estimates on a national level. However, it does not provide subnational dwelling and household estimates aside from the subnational household estimates on June 30, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2013 – all derived for subnational family and household projections.
Dwelling estimates are currently on a 2018-base, while household estimates remain on a 2013-base. Stats NZ will rebase and revise household estimates after the 2018-base estimated resident population is published.
However, Stats NZ clarified that the accuracy of its estimates depends on the accuracy of the estimated base and quarterly change in numbers. Meanwhile, the accuracy of the base depends on the accuracy of the census and the estimated adjustments made to the base.
