His mortgage journey started with a passion for property and property finance

This week, Mortgage Introducer is featuring Our Mortgage Broker’s Akhil Mair (pictured), who over the span of two decades, has transformed his initial passion for property into a thriving mortgage brokerage business.
How did you get into the mortgage industry?
My mortgage journey started with a passion for property and property finance in 2002 when I joined HBOS. Over the years and during my decade with them, I held various roles such as bank clerk, branch manager, business banking manager, and credit analyst. These experiences provided me with invaluable insights into the financial sector and helped me realise that property was a great asset class for both income and security.
In 2005, I bought my first property, which further solidified my interest in the industry. I initially started revising for the CeMAP qualification in 2008, but the financial crash led me to postpone this until 2017. That year, I successfully sat my exams and subsequently launched my own mortgage and insurance brokerage. This decision marked a significant turning point in my career, allowing me to fully immerse myself in a field I was passionate about.
What are your motivations to continue as a broker?
My motivation to continue as a broker stems from my deep-seated passion for helping people achieve their property ownership dreams. Each client’s unique financial situation presents a new challenge, and I find great satisfaction in providing tailored solutions that meet their needs. The dynamic nature of the mortgage industry keeps me engaged and constantly learning.
Additionally, the relationships the team and I build with clients and industry professionals are incredibly rewarding. Seeing the positive impact my advice and services have on clients’ lives fuels my drive to excel.
Furthermore, the ever-evolving market conditions and regulatory changes keep me on my toes, ensuring that I remain knowledgeable and adaptive. My commitment to ethical practices and providing top-notch service keeps me motivated to continue growing and improving in my role as a broker.
What are your future goals – for your personal career and your business?
Personally, my goal is to become fitter and healthier. Over the past 18 months, I have managed to lose 17 kilograms and have successfully kept the weight off. This journey has been transformative, not only for my physical health but also for my mental well-being. It has instilled in me a discipline and resilience that I aim to carry forward.
From a business perspective, Our Mortgage Broker’s goal is to continue growing the brokerage and expand our advisory team to 25 experienced advisors by 2025. I am also focused on enhancing our brand presence nationally. This involves not only expanding our client base but also solidifying our reputation as a trusted and reliable mortgage and insurance brokerage.
By achieving these goals, I aim to ensure that we remain at the forefront of the industry, providing exceptional service and innovative solutions to our clients.
