How and when did you become a mortgage broker?

My journey began in 2016, when I started my career as an accountant. During that time, I realised that many of our clients needed more than just accounting services — they required comprehensive financial advice, including support with mortgages. To address this, we introduced mortgage broking as an additional service, gradually evolving into what is now a one-stop shop for all kinds of financial advice.

This holistic approach allows us to offer tailored solutions under one roof, making the financial journey seamless for our clients. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact of providing expert guidance across various financial needs, including mortgages.

In your opinion, what has been the most positive development in broking?

For me, the most positive development in the broking industry has been the rapid digital transformation over the past decade. Technology has fundamentally reshaped how brokers operate, interact with clients, and deliver value. Advanced tools and analytics now empower clients with real-time data, market insights, and sophisticated financial planning capabilities. The digital transformation in broking has brought convenience, affordability, and empowerment to investors, while enabling brokers to operate with greater efficiency and innovation. As technology continues to evolve, this trend is likely to drive even greater advancements, ensuring the broking industry remains dynamic and inclusive.

What challenges do you see currently facing the industry?

One of the major challenges is regulatory compliance and staying up to date with constant policy changes. Another is the need to maintain a personal touch in an increasingly digital world. To address these, I believe in adopting innovative tech solutions that enhance compliance while freeing up brokers’ time to focus on personalised client interactions. Additionally, providing ongoing training and fostering a culture of adaptability within broker teams is crucial.

Can you share a memorable or challenging experience from your career as a broker and the lessons you gained from it?

One memorable experience was assisting a first-time buyer who had faced multiple rejections due to complex financial circumstances. By taking the time to understand their situation and working closely with lenders, we secured a mortgage that met their needs. This taught me the importance of persistence, empathy, and exploring every possible avenue to achieve the best outcomes for clients.

Could you share any valuable advice for individuals aspiring to become brokers or those new to broking?

I’d advise aspiring brokers to stay curious and adaptable. The industry is ever evolving, so embracing technology and continuous learning is key. Building trust with clients by being transparent and approachable goes a long way in establishing a successful career. Finally, don’t hesitate to seek mentorship and connect with experienced professionals who can provide valuable guidance.
