How I became a broker – Adam Thomas' story

Adam Thomas (pictured), managing director of Thomas Group Financial Services, has carved out an impressive career in the mortgage industry, blending passion, expertise, and a client-focused approach. His path to becoming a leading broker is a compelling narrative of seizing opportunities, dedication, and a drive to excel.

Getting into the industry

Thomas’ journey into mortgages began early in his career, when he was employed by a lettings agent who was closely linked with a mortgage broker. The bustling office environment was filled with conversations about finance, igniting his interest in the industry.

“I have always been attracted and interested in the finance industry,” he said. “I overheard conversations in the office and thought ‘I would love to be able to do that’.”

The idea of helping clients navigate the complexities of mortgage financing intrigued him. This inspiration led him to pursue the necessary qualifications to become a broker, all while continuing his role at the lettings agency. His proactive approach and determination laid the foundation for his future success in the industry.

After leaving the lettings agency, he worked as mortgage consultant, first at Countrywide Mortgage Services, and then at Coreco. He later joined Knight Frank Finance as mortgage broker, where he spent a couple of years before establishing Thomas Group Financial Services in 2021.

Motivations to continue as a broker

Unsurprisingly, Thomas’s enthusiasm for the mortgage industry didn’t stop at simply entering the field. His primary motivation as a broker stems from his genuine desire to assist clients.

“I enjoy helping my clients more than anything else,” he said. “I take great pride in the fact that my clients trust and rely on me for advice, whether that’s helping a first-time buyer to get on the property ladder, or assisting high-net-worth international clients with a wide range of assets and complex finance needs.”

This dedication to client service is also fuelled by another one of his motivations.

“I am motivated to be one of the country’s leading ‘all round’ brokers, and Thomas Group Financial Services becoming a one-stop shop, for anything finance related.”

Looking to the future

Looking ahead, Thomas has set ambitious goals for both his personal career and his business. He is currently nominated and shortlisted as a finalist in the “Best Overall Broker” category at the British Mortgage Awards, an accolade he hopes to secure.

For his business, he aims to “build a small, bespoke brokerage with a small amount of highly skilled brokers, who can assist a wide range of clients.”

His vision is to create an elite team that offers tailored solutions, ensuring each client receives the best possible service. By focusing on quality over quantity, Adam plans to maintain the personalised touch that has become a hallmark of his brokerage.
