The General Election is on 12 December.
Nationwide Building Society has welcomed the manifestos of both the Labour and Conservative Parties.
The Tories plans to end ‘no-fault evictions’ and to introduce Lifetime Rental Deposits which can be transferred from one property to another.
Labour meanwhile proposed a national ‘property MOT’which wouldintroduce a legal requirement for landlords to complete an independent annual inspection.
Both parties have promised an end to Section 21 ‘no-fault’ evictions.
Paul Wootton, director of home proposition, Nationwide Building Society, said:“It is encouraging that both major political parties have focused on renters in their manifestos.
“Indeed, what we have seen is that all parties have recognised housing as an important issue. Nationwide is hopeful that scrapping no fault Section 21 evictions can be delivered early in a new Parliament.
“More secure tenancies are important but government and the sector needs to work together to improve property standards.
“Moves by the Conservatives to reform the courts when it comes to evictions are a step in the right direction.
“It is also positive that Labour has adopted the idea of a property MOT as set out in the Evolving Private Rented Sector Review, funded by the Nationwide Foundation.
“Ongoing checks to assess the quality of a property throughout a tenancy should help ensure everyone has a good quality home they can call their own.”
