Theresa May’s appointment as Prime Minister has been welcomed by tenant charity Generation Rent.
The charity felt May has already gone further than the outgoing PM David Cameron in talking about the damaging consequences of high house price inflation.
Betsy Dillner, Director of Generation Rent, said: “It is encouraging that our new Prime Minister recognises the damage that house price inflation inflicts – not only on young people, but also the wider economy, by diverting cash away from productive investments.
“People who are stuck renting because of rising house prices still need stability in their homes and Theresa May should now act by giving renters greater protections against evictions and rent rises.
“In order to overcome the housing deficit, she must get ready to start building social housing if private developers hold back amid new economic uncertainty.”
On Monday when launching her short-lived leadership campaign May said: “Unless we deal with the housing deficit, we will see house prices keep on rising.
“Young people will find it even harder to afford their own home. The divide between those who inherit wealth and those who don’t will become more pronounced.
“And more and more of the country’s money will go into expensive housing instead of more productive investments that generate more economic growth."
However Dillner wasn’t taking anything for granted.
She added: “Given the government's shameful record on affordable housing, and their manifesto commitments to home ownership gimmickry, we cannot take anything for granted.
“In the coming weeks we will be doing what we can to guide the new PM in the right direction.
“First, we need to know who the housing minister will be.”
