Sanders has been chief executive since the company started in 2011, then known as Omni Capital Partners.
It is understood Sanders is taking time out but considering his options, while he is already on leave.
Executive director Dan Smith is currently undertaking Sanders’ responsibilities, while it is under review whether or not there will be a direct replacement in the chief executive role.
Fortwell Capital said in a statement: "The Fortwell Capital board, led by executive director Dan Smith, wishes to extend its enormous gratitude to Colin for his leadership over the last six years and remains committed to continuing the company’s support to borrowers, developers and investors seeking success in UK real estate."
Sanders grew the lender's bridging, structured finance and buy-to-let loan divisions, lending over £1bn.
Omni Capital Partners rebranded to Fortwell Capital in February last year andtransitioned its offering into larger short-term finance, structured finance and development finance products.
Before joining Omni Sanders was non-executive director of IFA firm Logical Finance Limited.
He was also chief executive of now defunct lender Money Partners as well as the CEO of GE Money.
