The Association of Mortgage Intermediaries has created a new membership class, with Stephen Smith (pictured) being awarded the trade body's first ever fellowship position.
Smith retired from Legal & General Mortgage Club last year after 24 years, while he has been on the AMI board since its inception.
AMI's new membership class will be honorary members for life and asked to support the board by counselling and advising the trade body.
Robert Sinclair, AMI chief executive, said it's unlikely there will be more than 10 fellows at any one point in time.
Smith's appointment was announced at AMI's annual dinner last night atthe Sheraton Grand London Park Lane Hotel in London.
