Most of the new homes delivered were new builds.
The number of affordable homes delivered in England in 2018 to 2019 rose by 22% year-on-year, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has revealed.
A total of 57,485 affordable homes were delivered between 2018 and 2019, with the majority (92%) being new build.
Hemat Natha, director of Mortgage Advice Point, said: “It’s fantastic that we’re getting new affordable homes built but it’s questionable whether they are affordable.
“We need more truly affordable homes in the market, not just homes propped up with Help to Buy and equity schemes.
“Affordable has to be affordable and that’s questionable.”
The number of new builds developed was at its highest level since 2014 to 2015.
The majority of the homes developed (66%) were for rental purposes including for social, affordable and intermediate rent.
Nearly half (49%) of all affordable homes delivered between 2018 and 2019 were funded through Section 106 agreements, which impact the development by requiring the land to be used in a certain way.
These agreements are often used for affordable housing developments.
