This follows chief executive Mike Coupe's decision to leave the business last month.
Davis is yet to set a date for his departure, whilst Coupe will be leaving in June.
Simon Roberts, current retail and operation director, will be taking over as chief executive.
Davis has formerly been chief executive of business banking at Barclays.
The mortgage book sell off is being dealt with by BNP Paribas, but in December several bidders were reportedly interested in the Sainsbury's mortgage book.
