Aegon pays 97% of CI claims

It paid out £33m on critical illness with an average claim size of £80,000.

Aegon paid out 97% of critical illness claims in 2015 – up from 93% the year before.

It paid out £33m on critical illness with an average claim size of £80,000.

Eight out of 10 claims were for cancer, heart attack or stroke, with cancer accounting for 65% of all claims.

It refused more income protection claims, as 85% were paid, although 98% of life claims were paid in 2015.

Dougy Grant, protection director at Aegon UK, said: “It’s very encouraging that year after year we’re making a real difference by continually increasing the number of claims we’re paying.

“Having such a high payment record underlines our desire to pay out on as many claims as possible.

“Thanks to early diagnosis, advances in research, new treatments, screening and increased cancer awareness, survival rates are increasing.

“However, with cancer accounting for the vast majority of claims, it makes sense to take out financial protection and put in place a financial safety net.”
