The move follows research from The Mortgage Business (TMB) that indicated almost a fifth of packagers supported calls for a unified packager organisation.
The TMB Survey of Mortgage Packagers revealed that 76 per cent agreed there was scope for several packager associations, while 19 per cent said that a unified trade organisation would better serve the industry.
Nigel Payne, managing director at TMB, said: “There is obviously a place for mortgage packager and distributor organisations within the industry and these statistics back up this view. Moreover since this survey, AMI has announced its intention to create a ‘packager task force’, which will be a tremendous to the industry.”

The survey also indicated that 60 per cent of packagers expected to receive increased interest from brokers in 2007, with 47 per cent indicating that the position of packagers was the strongest it had ever been.
Commenting on the ‘packager task force’, Rob Griffiths, associate director at AMI, said: “There has been a good level of interest in a unified association, and AMI’s involvement in it, and we have a meeting planned for April to discuss the idea fully. We have written to people interested in attending and are waiting to discuss further details.”
