ARLA is now beginning an extensive search for a suitable successor, working with specialist recruitment consultant, Property Personnel.
The role will be predominately outward-facing, with the responsibility for liaising externally with ARLA stakeholders and its extensive membership across the UK.
Mark Hayward, managing director of the National Association of Estate Agents (ARLA’s sister organisation), said: “Ian has been a credit to ARLA during his time with the organisation. I know he is held within the highest regard among those in the lettings industry and beyond.
“He is a true expert in his field and has campaigned tirelessly for much-needed Government regulation of the sector.
“As managing director, he has run ARLA’s internal affairs in exemplary fashion, while still finding time to regularly comment on industry matters in the media, as well as positively informing government policy.
“I must personally thank him for leaving the organisation in fantastic shape, with membership growing, and we must now look forward to finding a suitable successor.”
Potter’s retirement follows seven years of service with ARLA. Previously he was the original chairman of the Scottish regional branch in 1992, before joining the ARLA National Council.
He has also held senior positions with a number of letting agencies, as well as working in the banking sector with TSB Scotland.
