Brokers want to break free

Today's mortgage broker is working towards becoming happily self employed, especially if living in the South.

Whilst 34 per cent of the UK's brokers are currently self employed, a large proportion of the 66 per cent who currently work for someone else are aiming to follow in their footsteps.

These aspirations peak in the 35-44 age group, with half of brokers of that age aspire to be their own boss.

Perhaps this state of mind is largely driven by proximity to retirement and the realistic timeframe it takes to build a successful business. Certainly the fact that just 17 per cent of over 55s are considering this option is supportive of this idea.

The research also found that those working in businesses employing just two or three brokers are more likely to become self-employed than those in larger organisations.

Over half of appointed representatives say that they are unlikely to work for themselves in the future, compared to 33 per cent of directly authorised brokers.

Commenting on the results, Phil Rickards, head of sales at BM Solutions said; "Many employed brokers think that branching out on their own is the natural next step. It's not just our industry - many people across the UK are deciding to work for themselves.

"Whilst it's good that brokers are looking to develop their careers in this way, it's certainly not a move that should be taken lightly. With a lot of regulatory responsibilities and a serious obligation to their clients – in many cases it will be best fulfilled with the supportive framework of an employing organisation."
