Mr Matthews is the Chief Executive of Standard Life Assurance Limited responsible for Life, Pensions, Banking and Healthcare business in the UK. He would be joining the CII Board following an international career in insurance.
Australian Matthews graduated from Macquarie University, Sydney, in 1972 with a degree in Actuarial Studies before joining Legal & General, Australia, where he spent 23 years rising to the position of Managing Director. He later took up appointments with the National Australia Bank and subsequently Manulife in Canada and Japan.
Commenting on his candidature, Trevor Matthews said: "I am delighted to stand for election as Deputy President of the CII at such an exciting time in its history. The industry is going through a tremendous period of change which looks to continue, particularly with the announcement of the FSA's Retail Distribution Review. I have championed professionalism throughout my career and, if elected as Deputy President, this issue would be very high on my agenda during my tenure with the CII."
Director General of the CII, Sandy Scott, added: "Trevor has had an impressive career in the insurance industry, particularly in 2006 when he oversaw the dramatic transformation of Standard Life's UK Life and pensions business, which ultimately enabled Standard Life to demutualise and list on the London Stock Exchange. I know his contribution at the CII will be significant and I very much look forward to working with him in promoting professionalism in this great industry."
The current CII Deputy President, Lord Hunt of Wirral MBE, subject to due process is due to be elected as CII President
