As part of its mission to raise standards and increase consumer protection the GISC has stated that it is looking for higher levels of competence and professionalism. This is the first major move by the GISC as it begins its role as the effective regulator of the general insurance market.
Angela Darling, head of policy at GISC, said: "Maintaining the competence of all employees who act in a general insurance capacity is essential for all GISC member firms. I am delighted that Barclays and the CII have together achieved the first GISC competence and training accreditation award. Accreditation of an in-house training scheme covering 4,000 call centre staff clearly demonstrates Barclays’ commitment to its customers in respect of sales, advice and service."
Dr Sandy Scott, director general of the CII, said: "This is a major development, not only for the CII and Barclays, but for the industry as a whole. That said, it is also interesting that bancassurers are taking the lead. It is to be hoped that the milestone reached by Barclays will spur other organisations to act."
ß Halifax General Insurance (HGISL) has become the first household insurance provider to have its competency and training programme formally accredited under the GISC [Private Customer Code].
Howard Posner, managing director Halifax General Insurance, said: "We are thrilled to be the first to achieve this accreditation. The main aim of the GISC council is to make sure that customers are treated fairly and this is central to our training."
