Crawford McCaughie told delegates at the trade bodies’ annual lunch that the timing of the introduction of a single survey would dictate whether it was a success.
He said: “Not surprisingly the single survey scheme remains high on the agenda with the Scottish Executive having recently published its detailed proposals for the content of the single survey. The CML believes the timing for introducing the single survey is vital, and urges the Scottish Executive to consider a quiet period in the market to ensure minimal disruption.”
McCaughie also said the Scottish Executive needed to do more to help ease the problems of affordability in Scotland, advocating an increased supply of affordable housing through working with housing associations and the private sector.
He added: “While measures of affordability for homeowners remain better in Scotland than elsewhere in the UK they are nevertheless at record high levels. Lenders already offer innovative products to aid people, but more can be done to help them into the market.”
Mary Riley, managing director at Advanced Flexible Self Build Mortgage Limited, said:
“There is a buzz in the Scottish market that has not been there for a long time. We must keep an eye on the chains, especially on first-time buyers. Some are overstretching themselves and need a safety net when it comes to mortgage costs.”
