Cold calling continues

John Tegg of DMS Agency Services, who offer accident, sickness and redundancy cover, was shocked to receive a call from a company called DMS offering him mortgage advice. He claimed that he had been called twice in two days by the company and when he asked for their contact details they hung up on him.

Tegg said: “In the last month I have been called twice by people asking for the mortgage department, well we don’t have one as we don’t offer mortgages. Someone is using the name DMS and they are not on the FSA list as I checked it and contacted them.

“I believe that they are breaking the law in three ways – by using an automatic dialler, by cold calling and by ringing from the telephone preference list. If I was a broker and someone was calling randomly using my name my business could be damaged.”

Tegg has called on anyone else called by the company to get hold of their contact details by using 1471, or by managing to get their details over the phone when they call.

Andy Pratt, chief operating officer at Alexander Hall, said: “We do get people cold calling us and try to keep them on the phone for as long as possible but they seem to be briefed on what is going. If I was able to find out any information I’d refer them to the FSA as quickly as possible. Following regulation we all assumed this sort of thing was tightened up but it is still going on and I believe the FSA needs to get a strong hold on it.”
