Of the 1,463 buyers surveyed, over half were confused by legal documents, saying they were hard to understand or not made clear to them. Survey comments branded the UK house buying process ‘a joke’; archaic, chaotic and in need of major reform.
When questioned over what they would change, 48 per cent cited the length of time it takes. However, in Scotland this figure was reduced to 26 per cent, with more people concerned about the complexity of the process.
Ronnie Park, managing director of OneSearch Direct, said: “Transparency is the buzzword in many industries but clearly the residential property market has a lot to live up to. Home buyers feel alienated by jargon. At a time when there is uncertainty in the market, this is only serving to deepen the wounds in confidence.”
Roy New, a London-based sole broker, commented: “This is why people need to get independent advice from someone that’s recommended to them.”
