In a statement, Coventry said: “Having noted press speculation, Coventry can confirm that it has not entered a bid in connection with the sale of Northern Rock.”
Yorkshire said: “While we believe that the re-mutualisation of Northern Rock is the right thing, at this time this is not the transaction for our current and future members."
Yorkshire said it preferred to focus on its recent acquisitions of the Norwich & Peterborough savings company and the mortgage and savings business of Egg Banking.
"We are busy focusing on those two transactions.”
