Smith, a qualified chartered accountant and current member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales examinations team, joins the society with over 30 years experience in the financial services sector, most notably as a senior executive at Barclays Bank and as finance director of Portman Building Society. Since 2006 he has continued to work at board level through a number of non-executive directorships, including most recently with the Stroud & Swindon Building Society.
Commenting on the appointment, David Harding, chairman of the society, said: "Following the recent completion of the society's merger with the Stroud & Swindon Building Society, I am delighted to confirm Glyn's appointment to the society's board.
“I believe Glyn will help us to maintain the strength and independence of the board, challenge the society's management team whilst sharing its values and ambition, and that he will make a positive contribution to the future strategy and development of the society."
