The commission went on to say that recession also looks on the cards for some other european countries including Spain. Britain however will be one of the hardest hit with a fall in output of 0.2% in the third and fourth quarters of this year.
The growth forecast for the eurozone nations was cut from 1.7% to 1.3%. However, Jean-Claude Trichet, the president of the European Central Bank remained positive about the future saying: "we will have gradual recovery over the next years after the present depressed episode."
