The move has been welcomed. Commenting, Wayne Stevens of The Energy Portal said: “The potential EU Directive offers the prospect of creating a real shift in attitudes, providing a link between saleability and energy efficiency and offers homeowners who are planning on selling in the next couple of years the chance to be ahead of the game.
“Being compelled to declare publicly your home’s energy efficiency could disadvantage potential sellers where their energy efficiency ratings are low - especially if the current market conditions continue.
“However, ensuring high energy efficiency ratings will be an opportunity for astute sellers to market their properties from the best possible energy platform, which will be a useful tool to stand out from the rest.”
He continued, “We urge homeowners to find out how their property is rated regardless of when they plan to sell. This would give residents time to make any necessary changes, such as installing insulation or double glazing, but also allow them to reap the cost benefits of any upgrades.
“Not only will an energy efficient property be kinder to the environment but it is also kinder to the wallet.”
