George Osborne said the effect of this decision meant fuel would be 10p per litre cheaper that it would have been if it had stuck to the previous government’s plans.
He said: “That is real help with the cost of living for families as they fill up their cars across the country and it will help business too.”
Osborne said he had rejected suggestions to move the rise in duty to April next year deciding instead to scrap it completely and had moved inflation-only rises to September.
And he boasted that under the coalition government there had been no government increases in petrol taxes for almost two and half years.
