Alliance & Leicester has noted that even though the initial cost of making a three-bedroom, semi-detached home carbon neutral can come in at £9,000, the impact upon gas and electricity bills in the long term will really make a diffrence.
Improvements range from energy saving lightbulbs costing a couple of pounds to cavity wall insulation at around £500 and double glazing at £1,400.
Richard Al-Dabbagh, senior personal loans manager at Alliance & Leicester, said: “Becoming carbon neutral will not happen overnight. Nowadays more and more people are giving environmental considerations and their carbon footprints a higher priority. This includes trying to make their homes as energy efficiency as possible. There are lots of diverse ways homeowners can try and make their homes greener but it all depends on how much people want to spend.”
Homeowners could easily put this extra cash towards overpaying on their mortgage, if the product allows, reducing the overall costs in the long run.
