Hopkins named as new housing minister

The role of minister of state for housing was previously occupied by Mark Prisk who was asked to step down from the position yesterday.

Planning minister Nick Boles had been widely tipped for the role amid speculation that both the Planning and Housing portfolios could be merged under one minister.

However it appears that the government has now taken the decision to downgrade the position of housing minister to under secretary of state level, rather than minister of state. This is despite housing being one of the most important ministerial posts outside the cabinet.

Hopkins new role is his first in ministerial position after being elected in the 2010 general election.

Before his election to Parliament Hopkins had been a member of Bradford Council since 1998 and was the council's deputy leader in 2004 and leader in 2006.

During his time with Bradford Council Hopkins was in charge of the council’s housing portfolio.

Hopkins oversaw the delivery of housing stock transfer in Bradford as well as a commissioning process for the Council's community development provision.
