As has been pointed out by many commentators, the show was completely one-sided and failed to do anything to educate consumers as to the perils of lying when taking out a mortgage.
The fact is, these consumers lied to take out a mortgage, which is fraud, yet there was nothing in the show that condemned that. Once again, the consumer press has failed to educate people on why lying is not a good idea – you could end up losing your home.
It should not be putting the blame at the door of the lender and broker. Yes, there are some rogues out there, but knowing you are lying in order to secure a mortgage should ring alarm bells of property being out of reach. It’s time consumers took responsibility for their actions.
