Several leading figures from the financial and legal sectors have been acknowledged in the King's New Year Honours list for their contributions to business, public service, and social initiatives.
Former HSBC chief executive Noel Quinn has been knighted for his contributions to financial services and efforts towards achieving net-zero emissions. Quinn stepped down from his role at HSBC in September. Another notable figure, Edward Braham, chair of M&G and a former senior partner at Freshfields, also received a knighthood for his services to corporate law and business.
John Flint, another former HSBC leader and current CEO of the UK Infrastructure Bank, was named a Companion of the Order of the Bath for his public service contributions. London Mayor Sadiq Khan was also knighted for his political and public service.
Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBEs)
Baroness Poppy Gustafsson, co-founder and former CEO of cybersecurity firm Darktrace, was appointed CBE following her appointment as the Minister of State for Investment in October. Others recognised with CBEs included:
- Donald Robert, Chair of the London Stock Exchange Group
- Catherine Lewis La Torre, former CEO of British Patient Capital
- James Palmer, ex-senior partner at Herbert Smith Freehills
- Richard Susskind, writer and former technology adviser to the Lord Chief Justice
- Louis Taylor, chief executive officer of the British Business Bank
Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBEs)
Acknowledged for their work in finance, legal services, and social impact were the following:
- Miles Celic, chief executive of finance advocacy group TheCityUK
- Dana Denis-Smith, founder of Obelisk Support
- Vanessa Havard-Williams, former Linklaters partner and chair of the UK’s transition finance review
- Ian Karet, Linklaters intellectual property partner
- Paul Fisher, ex-Bank of England economist and UK Debt Management Office board member
- David Oldfield, former interim chief operating officer of Lloyds Banking Group
- Louise Smith, chair of Innovate Finance
- Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBEs)
The honours list also included individuals recognised for their specialised contributions:
- Joanne Ahmed, a Deloitte tax partner, for her services to business and trade
- Timothy Allen, Barclays director focusing on cash access, for his work in the cash and banking sector
- Helen Steers, a partner in Pantheon’s European investment team, for her voluntary service and efforts to promote gender equality in business
