This is according to general insurance provider Assurant Intermediary. Kevin Paterson, sales & marketing director, explained: "Additional covers - often referred to as add-ons - to buildings and contents policies not only make a significant difference to the level of cover a client has in place to protect their home, they can also boost an intermediary's income but many of the brokers we speak to are nervous about selling them. It appears that there is a chronic lack of understanding of what legal expenses, for example, does and doesn't cover. It's not surprising that if abroker isn't confident in their knowledge of a product, they're not going to be confident in recommending it to their client."
Add-ons provide additional cover for specific events that aren't covered in a standard buildings and contents policy. The most common add-ons include legal expenses, home emergency, multi- appliance warranty and gadget insurance.
