Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was heckled in the House of Commons today as he accused mutinous MPs of “factional manoeuvring”.
Corbyn said “Our country is divided and the country will thank neither the benches in front of me nor those behind me for indulging in internal factional manoeuvring at this time", which was greeted with boos and calls to “resign” from his own MPs.
Corbyn has lost 23 out of 31 members of the shadow cabinet in the last 48 hours after sacking shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn in the early hours of Sunday morning for reportedly leading a coup.
Yesterday Corbyn took for Twitter to say: “Those wanting to change Labour's leadership will have to stand in a democratic election in which I'll be a candidate.”
The departures have included John Healey, shadow secretary of state for housing and planning and Roberta Blackman Woods, shadow housing and planning minister.
Prime Minister David Cameron began today’s address by joking that new Labour MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan “should keep her mobile on… she might be in the shadow cabinet by the end of the day”.
More than 3,000 supporters of Jeremy Corbyn are set to march on Parliament Square at 6pm in support of the beleaguered leader.
