The lender has said that Staley has the “full confidence” of its board.
Jes Staley, chief executive of Barclays, has said he “deeply regrets” his association with Jeffrey Epstein, as reported by BBC News.
Barclays recently announced that UK regulators, the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority, are investigating Staley’s links to the sex offender.
The lender has said that Staley has the “full confidence” of its board.
According to BBC News, Staley told its reporters that, “it has been very well known that I had a professional relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
"It goes back to 2000 when I was asked to run the JP Morgan private bank and he was already a client when I joined the private bank.
"The relationship was maintained during my time at JP Morgan, but as I left JP Morgan the relationship tapered off quite significantly.
“Obviously, I thought I knew him well and I didn't. For sure, with hindsight with what we know now, I deeply regret having any relationship with Epstein."
Barclays added: "As has been widely reported, earlier in his career Staley developed a professional relationship with Epstein.
In the summer of 2019, in light of the renewed media interest in the relationship, Staley volunteered and gave to certain executives, and the chairman, an explanation of his relationship with Epstein.
