The area also has the highest average property price in Britain, at £857,225.
London boroughs make up the top 20 most expensive areas in Britain, as 11 boroughs have a price exceeding £5,000 per metre.
Altringham is the most expensive town per square metres outside Southern England, with the average price coming to £2,227 per metre, while this is followed by Edinburgh (£2,214), Solihull (£2,189) and Leamington Spa in the West Midlands (£2,144).
Craig McKinlay, mortgages director of Halifax, said: "House price per square metre is a useful measure for house price comparison because it helps to adjust for differences in the size and type of properties between locations.
“While there are areas in central London that are more expensive than anywhere else in the country, there are notable pockets outside the South East where property also has a high price per square metre.
“Many of those areas experiencing the strongest increases over the past few years are those with the highest price per square metre."
At the other end of the spectrum the least expensive area is Stanley in County Durhamin, with an average price of just £818 per metre.
Lambeth has made the biggest increase over the past five years, with prices increasing by 61% per square metre, while Kensington and Chelsea recorded the second highest price rise at 56%.
Greater London far outstripped the rest, experiencing growth of 34% compared to 13% in the South East, which saw the second biggest increase.
The North has seen prices per square metre fall since 2009 by 3%, while Scotland has recorded a 5% decrease.
Nationally, house prices per square metre have risen by 13% since 2009.
