Melton BS appoints Piranie as non-executive director

Melton Building Society has announced the appointment of Ashraf Piranie (pictured) to its board as a non-executive director, effective March 1.

Piranie will also join the mutual’s audit committee and, from July 1, will take on the role of chair at Melton’s subsidiary, Nexa Finance.

He brings more than 16 years of experience in the building society sector, having held senior leadership roles at West Bromwich Building Society as group finance and operations director and at Nottingham Building Society as deputy chief executive and finance director. His background also includes executive positions at Redwood Bank, Al Rayan Bank (formerly Islamic Bank of Britain) and Santander (formerly Alliance & Leicester), with expertise in strategy, mergers and acquisitions, change management, finance and treasury.

In addition to his new role at Melton, Piranie currently chairs the risk committees at Monument and GB Bank, where he also serves on the main boards.

His addition to the board follows the appointment of Kath Myers as a non-executive director. In September, Sue Douthwaite was named chair of Melton Building Society, replacing Fiona Pollard, who stepped down from the role.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Sue and the rest of the board, in what is a landmark 150th year for the society,” Piranie said. “I look forward to representing the views of our membership as we progress with our aims of making a society fit to serve our members for the next 150 years.”

Douthwaite welcomed the appointment, stating that Piranie’s expertise and experience in financial services, particularly his years spent within the building society sector, will be incredibly valuable.
