Mortgages take a back seat

Instead the average time spent researching products to meet their borrowing needs is a little over 5 hours.

Boredom and confusion are key factors in this apparent lack of interest, affecting the older generations more than their children. Whilst over half are simply overwhelmed by the choice in the market, coupled with the complexity of tightening criteria and shrinking affordability.

Some just don't get the same 'buzz' they do when shopping for holidays, shoes or gadgets. Others put their lack of interest down to time constraints.

Of those who do spend a bit of time hunting around for a new mortgage, 38 per cent go with the 'easy option' of sticking with the same lender.
