Having watched an interview with Alistair Darling yesterday where he repeated the same answers again and again it is clear that he has been giving a line to follow which he is sticking to whatever the question. Whether he actually believes what he is saying only he will know.
However lets not forget the governments damage limitation policy was brought about by the contention of Mr Darling that we face the worst economic climate in 60 years. Presumably he must be referring to Britain alone as in the US last week figures came out that were both surprising and encouraging, with notably consumer demand for big ticket items showing growth on top of an upgrade in GDP figures.
Remembering the three day week of the 1970's and the dole queues of the 1980's I think it is unlikely that many people would agree with Mr Darling's assessment of economy, and if he does know something that many others don't then he should have kept it in the cabinet rooms.
The story is likely to drag on for a while yet following which at a convenient time Mr Darling will be asked to move over, to another department one would guess, rather than to the Conservatives.
