Another major source of wealth was in private pensions (38%), while the report also took into account physical wealth such as assets and financial wealth such as the value of savings and investments minus debts.
Between July 2010 and June 2012 total UK wealth stood at £9.5 trillion, however just 9% was owned by the least wealthy 50% of households.
The report said levels of income have risen since 1980, but the gap between the richest and poorest fifth of households has widened over the same period.
