Revealed on Wednesday by Housing and Planning Minister Yvette Cooper, the independent review will analyse the problems faced by both tenants and landlords.
Managing director of Nationwide Specialist Lending, Andy McQueen said there needed to be a resurgence of professionalism within the buy-to-let market, adding: "The landlords that brokers have introduced to Nationwide Specialist Lending have already demonstrated the professionalism and high standards at work in the sector, but this review will help further explore the issues they and their tenants may face.
However McQueen warned: "The Government will also need to exercise caution when considering the review's recommendations to ensure any changes made do not result in the sector becoming over-regulated."
The governmental move draws on a recent Citizens Advice Bureau report which found that 1 in 5 tenants were dissatisfied with the quality of repairs carried out by their landlord, but feared retaliatory action if they complained to authorities.
However on the flipside, many landlords can face problems from poor tenants guilty of anti-social behaviour and/or defaulting on rent.
The review will examine how the increase in buy to let accommodation and student tenants has impacted on the private rented sector, along with the quality of homes.
