Ryley, who was formerly head of financial services regulation at Bristol based TLT Solicitors, joined Michelmores to head up the firm’s financial services and markets practice. Ryley specialises in FSA regulatory issues that affect financial services product providers, banks, collective investment schemes, fund and asset managers, investment companies, prime and non-conforming mortgage lenders, general insurers, networks and intermediaries, including IFAs.
He also represents regulated firms and approved persons in contentious compliance issues, enforcement proceedings and financial services litigation.
William Michelmores, senior partner at Michelmores, said: "Philip is acknowledged as a leading regulatory lawyer in the financial services sector and we are delighted to have recruited him. Michelmores is developing its sector focus in financial services and Philip’s experience and knowledge will be a huge asset to our rapidly expanding practice. As well as being a widely known commentator, speaker and author on regulation during the last 10 years, Philip has been very active within compliance professional organisations and industry associations.
"We will continue to develop our specialist services to the sector, particularly in areas of acquisitions, mergers and sales, company re-structuring, human resources, regulatory risk management, product development and dispute resolution. The financial services sector is in a constant state of flux due to product and technological innovation, ever-changing regulation, increasing competition from overseas and not least, because of changing market demands. We believe we can compete with the very best, to provide specialist legal services to both retail and wholesale providers and distributors in these changing times. Philip’s arrival at Michelmores takes us closer to our objective of being the firm of choice for those businesses in the financial services sector."
Philip Ryley added: “Michelmores is a dynamic and ambitious firm which is committed to servicing the financial services sector on a national scale, as well as supporting the local financial services businesses, which are particularly thriving in and around the South West. I am greatly looking forward to the challenge of creating new business and new relationships based on Michelmores’ Exeter and London practices.”
