The Self Build Cost Index is published twice yearly in the spring and autumn, and compares the costs in the different counties of building a four bedroom house with the costs of buying a similar house in the same area. The Index, compiled jointly by Build It and Buildstore, found that while costs obviously varied throughout the country, in 64 out of 76 counties, people who built their own homes made significant savings.
The top six counties for savings on self-build are:
• Shropshire: £148,033
• Greater London: £123,567
• Devon: £120,509
• Essex: £117,837
• Norfolk: £116,975
• Cheshire: £116,116
Commenting on the Index, Martyn Hocking, editor of Build It, said: “It comes as no surprise to us that the savings like these can be made on building your own home. This can be even more significant if it saves you borrowing the money to finance the same type of house already built. Building your own home is a real investment and more affordable than most of us think.”
