In its first self-employed report called ‘Self Starter,’ UCB reports that London tops the regional league with self-employed people paying around £211,000 for a home, compared with the lowest price of around £105,000 in Northern Ireland. The Self Starter report also looks at the self-employed population and shows that the percentage of British people who class themselves as self-employed varies from 5% to 28% across different regions in the UK. Among major cities, London rates above the UK average of 11.4%, but other cities such as Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds are below average.
The report also reveals that increasing numbers of people are turning towards specialist mortgages designed for the self-employed and others on variable incomes. It examines the regional and international differences in levels of self-employment, and highlights the significant differences in the popularity of self-employment between men and women, and ethnic groups.
