Nearly 25% of all applications received worldwide through moneynetinternational's Global Mortgage Service were for homes on mainland Spain*.
The second top destination was France, which accounted for 17.68% of enquiries. Potential purchasers of UK-based property accounted for just over 14% of applications - a 13% drop since the last quarter. Just over 68% of the applications were from the UK, with residents of the US and Germany coming in second and third place respectively.
The research was carried out during the period 1 June to 31 August 2002.
