The forecast by NHPAU is based on the number of homes being built nationally at a projected figure of 190,000 a year for the next decade. The research also showed that four million people believed they would never own their home, while 18 per cent claimed it would be at least five years before they would be in a position to buy.
Professor Stephen Nickell, chair of the NHPAU, said: “Housing affordability has reached a critical point. It is a complex issue determined by population trends, interest rates, land availability, earnings and housing supply.”
